How It Started
The Cheesecake Factory is a restaurant chain that was established in Detroit in the 1940s by Evelyn and Oscar Overton. Evelyn was a marvellous baker and well-known for her original cheesecake recipe that everyone loved. She decided to open a small cheesecake shop in 1940 in order to expand her baking expertise. However, she was unable to balance the busy lifestyle of raising two small children and managing the shop, so she set aside her dream of pursuing the bakeshop business. In 1972, the Overton’s decided to bring their cheesecake business to Los Angeles and ventured in the opening of a small store called “The Cheesecake Factory”. After many years of economic struggles, their perseverance finally paid off and the business, The Cheesecake Factory, flourished into a successful enterprise in Los Angeles, California. The Overton’s also began shipping their cakes from Santa Barbara to San Diego because of the high demand for their cheesecake. In 1978, their son David opened up a location in Beverly Hills, and his efforts proved the value of their product. The restaurant was an enormous success. Thirty years after the first restaurant opened, The Cheesecake Factory has grown into a well- known business with 170 locations throughout the United States and has exceeded every expectation of the Overton’s family dream of owning their own business.
